Los Angeles: Santacon!

Santacon, or Santarchy as it is also known, is an annual event worldwide with Santas getting together to have a good time. Santacon is known for its bawdiness, pranks, and harmless behavior.

These photos were taken at Los Angeles Santa Con in 2005. I didn't post all the pictures I took. If I took a picture of you at Santacon (likely,) shoot me an email at kathryn [a] kosmonaut dot net and send me a photo of you. If I have a shot of you, I will happily send it along.

Los Angeles: Floss Silk Tree

Floss Silk Tree (Chorisia speciosa) is a native of South America and grows well in California. It is a popular ornamental tree in Los Angeles and lines many streets. The trunks are thick and green, and covered with spiny thorns. In the Fall, the tree produces hibiscus-like flowers that are creamy-white in the center and bright pink on the outside. When the flowers die, they are replaced with large green mango-shaped fruits that are filled with white silky material that is used for stuffing cushions in South America.

Los Angeles: First Thursday San Pedro

San Pedro is a former fishing town on the Port of Los Angeles. The old Customs houses and other unused commercial spaces have been turned into artist lofts. On the first Thursday of every month, the artists open their studios to the public.
